Hello,

I'm a CWO2 in the Coast Guard and coming up on my 17th year of service. I will be 38 when I retire and I'm sure I will still have desire to serve. Is it possible to retire from the another branch and join the Army National Guard?

Thanks,

Scott Howell

Thanks for your desire to serve. You are ineligible for service in the ARNG if you are drawing retired pay. NGR 600-100 ch2-8.

Major,

What if you are a gray area retiree? I do not draw retired pay until I am 60 but have considered joining as a Warrant Officer in the High Tech Field. I have the education and experience but I am long in the tooth (44).

- Yes, I did ask a similar question in a previous thread..

You need to get out of the Retired Reserve and into the IRR. Then the Guard can pull you from the IRR. Since you're not drawing retired pay, you can do this. This is critical: it's your job to get into the IRR, no one else can do this for you, since no one else has any authority in this matter. Comply with the requirements on the attached policy extract. Work closely with your state's Officer Strength Manager or Command Chief Warrant Officer. I've worked this process before, and it's not particularly difficult, but it is time-consuming. Best regards!
