Hello :)
My basic stats:
Age: 39 (40 in October)
Prior service: 6 years active USMC, honorably discharged E-5 in 1991.
Education: BA, MA, 1st degree black belt.
Health: good (ACL recon in left knee, 1998).
My question:
If I enlisted in the Guard, would I be stuck in my old MOS of armorer? I'd prefer infantry, medical specialist, or chaplain assistant (if that's possible under a 3-year commitment).
Thanks for your help,
Teufel

No. You'd qualify for OCS and a retrain as an officer in any field?

Must be commissioned the day prior to 40th birthday, or he never will be.

You can come in under any mos that you choose. You will not have to go through basic training, but you will need to go to the MOS school that you enlist under. You will keep you E-5, and will be eligible for a bonus.

You have a few options if you want to join the Guard.
First, since you have made it clear that you want to keep your commitment under 3 years, you can do the "Try One" enlistment option. Under this option you agree to contract for one year on drilling status with a unit which has one of the specialties you mentioned and give it a go. Once your time is up, you can extend with the unit and request to be sent to the MOS school if you feel it's something you enjoy. You can also enlist for one the specialties you mentioned for a period of two years get MOS qualified, complete your 2 years on drilling status and decide what to do after your stint. You will not be eligible for any bonuses if you select any of these two options.
You may also decide to push your commitment time a little higher and join for 3 years in which case you'll be eligible for a bonus. Keep in mind that qualification for those specialties will depend on your ASVAB scores being converted to the line scores the ARNG uses for MOS eligibility. If your line scores are good, there shouldn't be any problems at all joining into what you want.

I responded to your email if you contact me we can work something out that you want and try to keep it 3 years or less, but there is no bonus for the try one

I've been working w/a local ANG recruiter in WA. He mentioned the Try-1 program (but not the 2-year plan - is that state-specific?). Both sound interesting to me (I did a 6-year enlistment in the Corps, and 6 years seems a lot longer at 39 than it did at 18). I'm focusing on the Medical Specialist MOS.
That's interesting that I can drill w/a unit for a year w/out getting MOS qualified. How does that work?
Thanks again for the info :)

I am currently an E-5 former Marine on a Try One. Its OJT. My recruiter told me, and as far as I can tell it is reflected in my contract, that a Marine qualfies for 11B w/o basic, ait, WTC,etc.....I have even heard of some 10 day crash course as well.
What I do know is basically, you TRY the Guard/unit/MOS out for ONE year and at the end of the year if you 'like it' you then go to training and become MOSQ.
