I think I might have cavities, but I'm shipping off in a couple weeks. (I don't have insurance or a dr or a dentist.) If they find out I have cavities while doing the x-rays, what happens? I'll go to AIT right afterwards, for 17 weeks. I wonder if cavities will be a problem?

They will take care of it there for you. If not, ask to go to dental sick call later on in training when there is a good time (your DS will tell you when) and tell them you are having pains and trouble eating.

How will this effect my training? I've never had dental work done. They always just cleaned my teeth and said I had no cavities. Should I wait until AIT?

Unless they have to do something major like a root canal or pull some teeth, dental work is no big deal. I've had a few cavities in my life and just get them drilled, filled, and back to work.

I have wondered this myself, if there just small cavities then do they do the drilling there? Or just move ya on if its no problem?

if you can get free treatment go for it just wait until the end of training or when ur drills say it is a good time it will take you out of a day or so of training

Or if you're like me and need all 4 of your wisdom teeth removed.

I'll take the "****" factor in order to save a few thousand dollars on medical bills by letting the army do it for free.

I got my teeth cleaned at AIT. One of the best times to get dental work done. One guy who had meth mouth got all new white teeth put in. Prolly 5 grand or so worth of dental work. The Army will take care of you. I wouldn't do it in basic though.

Ew meth mouth...
Yeah, I have to have my molars removed too. I guess I'll just wait till just before some weekend I have off in AIT and spend it in bed reading and drooling in private.

BTDT had all four wisdom teeth pulled in boot, had to have them "cracked" I can still hear the hammer hitting the chisel to split the tooth.
But seriously I didn't feel a thing and it was over in like an hour.

Dido on the other comments, if you don't have major problems with your teeth just wait until a convienent time comes for you and your schedule. I just got my wisdom teeth pulled here in AIT, wow.... Worst week ever after getting 4 of them pulled.

this is what i am afraid of, them messing w/ my teeth. I have a cracked tooth, it does not bother me, I don't feel they should pull it or fix it if it doesnt bother me. same as my wisdom teeth... i hope they leave them alone, they don't bother me.

Yeah I need my wisdom teeth pulled too but have no dental insurance to cover part of the costs. I am wondering, however, how well they examine your teeth prior to being deployed?

Mom's Mistake, have you looked into Tricare's dental coverage? I pay $7/month for dental. I'm not sure on co-pay or if you have to have health insurance with Tricare though.

YES!!! If you've ever had to PAY for dental work, just **** it up and enjoy the care they give you for free. Take all you can get.

In BCT we only had our X-rays taken. Then went to AIT and had the actual exam done. I had 1 cav + 1 reconstruction. Best thing to ever happen. And don't ever ever ever worry about going to sick call or missing training. The DS all want you to leave for graduation. They don't like hold overs. They will threaten you and tell you that you'll not graduate. But, they are ALL empty threats. They tell you the same thing at AIT. The DS will tell you to go to sick call if your actually sick, then laugh at you for standing in the front of first formation cause you had to go to sick call. One day we had 36 people in the sick call line. (I was at sick call for 8 hours waiting to be seen) You should have heard the First Sgt yelling at us all cause we were doing a company run. Many of the weak-boddies went so they could miss the run. I had a follow-up appointment and was on profile anyway.

What ever the appointment is, just go. Don't worry! You'll not be missing something important. I worried every time I missed training. And the worry was for nothing.

Maybe that's the case for a 92Y;)

I hated missing training because I enjoyed the things I was learning.

Going back to the OP, I had 2 wisdom teeth taken out at the end of AIT to try and save some chedda. They will not give anyone in IET gas unless you are getting something major done. They gave me 6 shots in the mouth to numb it and I was awake for the whole procedure.

Yes, and it's no different than the coverage I had at my previous job, so I know how it'll benefit me. But the work I know I need done is pricey and most of it will come out of my pocket. However....I'm going to AIT here soon so I'd rather have the Army pay for it instead of me. Sounds bad to say that, but really who wouldn't if it's free? Dental work can be expensive otherwise!

I've spoke to a few people in my unit who went on the previous deployment to Iraq. They said dental exams are pretty thorough but you'll have plenty of time to get it all fixed before you're gone since you'll be ordered to get the work done.

No doubt about that. I told the DS I didn't want to have to pay out of pocket when I got home and he told me what to say to get the doc's to take them out:D

Lowe, please don't take that one line out of context. I guess it would help to explain (as you already know) that you get such repetitive classroom training ( 92y) that if you miss a few hours of training, you'll be brought up to speed without any trouble. Don't take it as "I could care less about my training." I'm very proud I only missed some class time(dentist and doctor required) 1-2 hours before being dismissed. My point was IF you are sick, just go and don't panic about missing training. But, if you can deal with it then good.

Okay, I should've known better, particularly because it was you. You always seemed squared away.
