Check the regs, but if you take it to a Alteration Shop, more than likely they have done thousands before and usually get it right every time. Costs less than a milkshake and takes about 2min.

Wearing sew-on insignia has always been my choice. Not only do pin-on rank on your cap cause funny little indents on your forehead, but if you happen to bump your noggin it's going to hurt a lot worse. I once had one of the clasps fall off without knowing it and shortly after putting my cover on, I got a nasty stick right center on my forehead. Never have used pin-on since then.
Same goes with the uniform (or at least it did). Sew-on just seems to look better, last longer, and not interfere with duties. There is also nothing to fall off or get lost, and you don't need to carry a sharpie around in your pocket to touch-up anything that might be chipped or rubbing off.

Go to the nearest base and take it to the military alterations shop. I had absolutely no idea how to do mine, and then end result when it came back looked a lot better than anything I could have done myself.
Cost like $3.50 or so. It was a navy reserve base but they had no problem doing it to army standard.

I prefer getting poked in the head by the metal pins, its a good time.

Or have a local tailor sew it in the middle...who also has probably done it once or twice before.
Seriously......take it to a base? lol Let's be honest, when was the last time an NCO did uniform inspection on you with a ruler?

I learned to sew. Saved me hundreds of dollars when we had BDUs.

Is there a picture of a cloth patch sew on somewhere? This little patch has two insignias connected, and ragged edges.
What color thread to use also?
At what lengths do you fold the edges and where is the exact place to put it?
Thanks.

Just cut the two apart and fold in the ragged edges. Sew it in the middle of the cap on the front. Try to center it.

I dunno.. personally I'd wait until i make at least E-5 and I know I'm staying that rank for awhile.
Case in point: Just got moved over from SPC to CPL this month, and I ALMOST gave in and got some rank sewn on!! :p

On the subject of patches, I ordred some extra name tags from Ranger Joes, they came in and the lettering is way more bold then the couple of tags I was issued. I am not sure but I don't think they are up to military specs for uniform wear. Has anyone else ordered them and if you have did you acutally "velcro" them on?

I have a bunch of tags from Ranger Joe's and I also noticed they were bold. I wore them throughout BCT and no DS ever noticed or said anything.

If you'll remember, this was somewhat common in the BDU days as well.

LMAO Sir!
True story... I was at Camp Shelby MS in 05 for deployment train up. We were still wearing BDU's, didn't get ACU's until they left to go to Kuwait. So we get to MS and peoples unis are all jacked up. Half of them didn't have keystones on their shoulders or flag patches.. it was ridiculous.....
Well the little alterations shop on Shelby was completely overwhelmed with work and was charging 3 bucks a patch. I had my ex husband ship my sewing machine down to me. I under cut her by a buck and only cahrged 2 bucks to do rank instead of the 6 she was charging. Yes she counted each piece of rank as a seperate patch. I sewed stuff on everything from a COLs uni down to PFCs! Before I left MS, I had made well over 400 bucks sewing on patches! hahahha

I sewed my companies uni's when we went over the first time. We had a lot of transfers in who needed to have our patch sewed on. Then when we got CIBs and Combat Patches we had to do another round in theater.
I didn't charge anybody though...
