I am attending VMI in Lexington Virginia, and am interested in joining the National Guard. I have a meeting with the recruiter on Thursday, but would like to have a little more knowledge so I can ask pertinent questions.

My question is, do I have the option of joining a unit in my hometown (Maryland) or do I have to join a unit located in Virginia?

What I would like to do in the Guard is Special Forces, but I understand that only certain states have those specialized units. Am I permitted to join one of those units even if I'm not residing in that state? The reason I ask is that I believe there is a Special Forces unit in West Virginia, and one in Maryland (correct me if I'm wrong)

Otherwise I will just go in as an 11b.

Thanks

You can join any unit in any state you wish to...Not just the state you live in. Keep in mind that there in an interview process to join a Special Forces unit.

VTGuard,

Thank you for your reply. I was not aware of the interview process needed, but I do know that becoming apart of a Special Forces unit is no easy task, I dont expect it to be. I will talk to my recruiter on post more on Thursday. Thanks for the info once again.

Please be careful about not biting off more than you can chew. Special Forces isn't just another job in the Army. The training pipeline is measured in years, not months. If you want to do this, then you might do better to withdraw from college for about 18 months to complete the training (presuming you can get in right away).

I recommend you consider a traditional Infantry enlistment right there in Lexington, and continue your college plans.

Ask your Recruiter (SFC Riddle, right?) about a National Guard ROTC scholarship. We can hook you up with a three year free ride.
