lol that photo is so rigged! NOBODY smiles during the leaning rest. I dont care who you are, sooner or later that position is going to wear away at you and if a DS catches you "smiling" yea goodnight!
I got lucky when I was first intoduced to the 'leaning rest' at my first rsp a few weeks ago. I'm in pretty good shape and can do a ton of push ups so I was able to hold out but **** did that hurt. Bet your *** I've added that exercise to my regimen since then.

what exactly is the leaning rest?
It's when you're doing a push up and you go 'down', instead of directly going 'up' you stay in the 'down' position and 'hold' that position for as long as the DS tells you to. And the the DS may say 'up' and you may have to hold that position for as long as the DS tells you to as well.
Technically speaking it probably sounds easy and it kinda is. What makes it hard is that they tell you to do the leaning rest usually right after you just did 20-40 push ups already. Then they tell you do stay down hold, come up hold, do another 10 push ups, go down and hold. Repeat. Basically its an endurance thing. Build up your endurance and the number of push ups you can do and its really nothing special. If you struggle to do just the 20-40 push ups before the leaning rest position lol well good luck and goodnight you're going to be waking up the next morning with a tingling sensation in your chest :p

Yep, I learned that at RSP... I was the last one to get into position for it during PT :o They smoked us hard (50 or so push-ups) and I did my best! We had to do them over and over again cause one of the girls wouldn't do them  She was right beside me to. Then they held us in the leaning rest position for 1 minute. I had to go to the approved rest position. Also, after we were done, I grabbed my canteen and drank about 1/2 of my water. I was right in front of the Sargent at this point. Immediately after I drank, the SGT said, "why is no one draining there water??? Can you do more push-ups. I was right in front and after this little break, I was ready to go again. But I wasn't gonna say yes ;)
Then he made us do a straight arm hand touch over our heads. Our arms were not to "south" of our shoulders (horizontal). We did this for 90 reps. The first 30 were easy. The next 60 I could feel it in my muscles. Then I had to dig deep for the last 30... But he kept going cause everyone else "tried" to quit. I'm glad I didn't see the rest of the group behind me! After PT, I got a big grin from the Sargent! Maybe I impressed him on my first rough PT??? I know I felt it all over, and I never gave up.
