My son left today for basic training at Fort Knox. (he is plassiter)
Can you tell me anything about Fort Knox? Has anyone here been there?
How long before he can write or call home? I have been told by his recruiter that Knox is the hardest BT facility in the US, so why did he get sent there? Was it b/c of his MOS?
I am proud of him, but very heartbroken to know he'll be gone for 29 weeks counting AIT. He does get a 2 week Christmas exodus though, thank God!
Does anyone here know about a "basic training open house" where the parents can come visit?

...., and it is probably softer now than it was back then. Easier? All soldiers should be held to the same standard, so it all depends on him if he has trouble meeting those standards or not. If he truly wants to be there, then he will succeed.

You should be proud of him, as he has volunteered for duty while we are at war. Continue to support him thru your cards and letters. I know you're heartbroken right now, that is only natural, but don't let on that you are "HTBRKN," just let him know you miss him, but support him. Once all his training is complete, you may have the opportunity to attend a family day event, where he may even get a 24 hr pass to spend time with you. Regardless, you will notice a significant change for the better in your son, which will make ALL of the sacrifices that comes in being a military family all the worthwhile.

Thanks, he actually called last night. It was so good to hear he was ok and still psyced about being there. When I said I was/am heartbroken, I do not mean b/c he joined the Guard, I mean b/c I go 10 weeks w/o seeing my boy. I am very proud of him, I have always supported out soldiers. As an Army brat, it's all I have ever known.
I appreciate the advice. I feel better since I know he's there, he's ok, and he's happy. All he hears is pride and love in my voice.
Now, to get through the next 9.5 weeks! (me, not him!;) )

I have heard from him, he seems to be in good spirits and doing well. That makes a huge difference to me.

He was sent there because of his MOS, That is where I went in 98 it is a great place to through. No worries.

These guys are just teasing cause they dont want you to know they probaly cried at basic, or there recruiter didnt tell them anything and they feel like they should do the same. Fort Knox, is an all male basic training, due to most mos's it harbors. Your son will be first sent to in processing and maybe get 5 minutes to call and say he fine. After that it usually take about three weeks of basic before you get a call. However, he can write you as soon as he gets there. Once you get his address, you can write back everyday, in the evening the have what is called mail call. And your son will get your letters.

Ft. Knox is the hardest basic from what I have heard. But also the best!!

Just imagine your son is in college doing homework. Only 10weeks.

I went off to college 5 years ago and couldn't afford to come home but once a year for the first two years. Basic Training was nothing in comparison. Just find a hobby. That is what my mother did, she joined women's pool league. She still continues that hobby today!!
