I am looking for some help, hopefully from a Warrant Officer Recruiter looking to fill some flight slots.....here is my situation....

I am a Specialist in the Army National Guard and a prior service Marine. I applied for the Warrant Officer program over a year ago, for rotary wing aviator. I went through and passed that AFAST test, my entire flight physical was approved by Fort Rucker, and my secret security clearance was approved.

I was told that I am no longer being considered because NGB would have to grant a moral waiver. The CW5 that was assisting me in the process, advised that he called down and they (NGB) told him not to bother sending the waiver request down.

I am a full time police officer on the civilian side and feel one of my best assets is my integrity. Which in this case has seemed to put a obstacle in my way.

I disclosed previous drug use when enlisting in the Guard. I was never caught, charged, or arrested for anything. I simply disclosed it, because I felt it was the right thing to do. This drug use was over a decade ago.

I am looking for any help. Any other avenues to try and pursue this..ie. another state National Guard or maybe a transfer to the reserves? Also how long is my physical, security clearance, and AFAST results good for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

did you have to submit a moral waiver when you joined the Guard in relation to the drug issue? if that was approved then its bewildering that it shouldnt be accepted now. I would call the Warrant Officer recruiting office on the USAREC website and ask for advice; perhaps they can help you. I had to submit a moral waiver for my application and it was accepted but it was just for a trespassing in 1990. But I was always told this, dont open a can a worms if it wasnt out there. meaning disclosing unnecessary stuff might do more harm than good and even though you applauded for the integrity; it might hinder you are some future goals. Just a word of advice that was passed down from leadership to me when I was an NCO.

DNALL and roblyman might be able to assist you.

Thank you sir. I am kind of regretting this disclosure; however I am in law enforcement, and did not want to compromise any future positions that may be available by lying to the government. (In my state law enforcement has to take polygraph tests when ever they join a new agency. They ask about lying to the government on the polygraphs)

Anyway, what’s done is done. I will email the links you provided and seek further direction.

Thank you again.

Sorry. I didn't answer your question. I did have to apply for a moral NGB waiver when I enlisted and it was approved then.

ok and go to the main warrant officer recruiting page and email the warrant officer recruiters as well. explain the whole nine. and email here as well...

Also, I was told that I wouldnt get a G3 waiver since my leg got busted in Iraq. Guess what? I put in for the G3 waiver and got it (with two days turnaround no less). Dont listen to what some people say, just put in the necessary paperwork through the proper channels.

I hope I can put the NGB waiver through. The CW5 made it sound like it is something that he has to initiate. I guess only time will tell. I just sent out an email to the link you posted. I’m crossing my fingers.

Just an update, I already received a couple of responses from those emails I sent out last night.

1.) Apparently prior drug use disclosure is NOT a disqualifying factor as long as it is waived.

2.) There is someone contacting my State to see what they can do for me.

I hope this doesn't come off like I jumped the chain of command, however I wasn't getting any responses anywhere else.

Sounds like you're tracking already.

I would have told you another state is not going to work. If NGB is saying no, then it's the same answer to every state.

I don't think a drug disclosure would hurt an application, unless you also need a vision and age waiver, then you're sunk.

Flight physicals are good for one year. Then you have to do an initial all over again until you are on flight status (at Rucker), at which point you just get a simple update. If you have a secret clearance, that's good for 10 years. If it's just a closed investigation, that's nothing, but it should accelerate the process when you reapply. AFAST is good for life, considering you are not allowed to retake it after you've passed.

Keep us updated on how things work out.

Sir,

Thanks for the reply. Its funny that you say that, because the CW5 told me that another state is not going to work as well. I guess i am just persistent to a fault.

It seems as though NGB grants waivers on the needs of the Army. From what I have read, it sounds like a waiver that is denied this month, might not necessarily be denied the next month.

As far as everything else goes, I don't need any other waivers except for the moral waiver. My vision, age, height + weight, security clearance, AFAST, and PT score is all good to go. My flight physical was sent to Fort Rucker and came back approved as well.

Anyway, I will keep everyone posted.

NGB is actually pretty consistent over time, at least with flight stuff. It's DA (big Army) that's inconsistent from month to month based on filling numbers from whatever pool they have to work with at that moment.

Drugs are a NO GO AT THIS STATION for AV...not just pilots, but most of the flight line jobs as well. No help, and no waiver authorized.

I am just about done with my packet for flight school. I have a possession charge from 1997 that is pending a waiver right now. It doesn't look like it will be a show stopper given all of the positive things I have done since then. The fact that you are in law enforcement probably speaks volumes. I would be surprised if this kills your packet.

Im not giving up, however I haven't heard anything positive about this issue. I can't even get someone to send a waiver request through; and I have the rest of my packet completed.

My WO recruiter made me do a statement of circumstances for each charge and she handled it from there. Focus on the positive things you have done since then in your statements. My company CO interviewed me about it and has signed off on it. I think it has to go higher than him though. Your CO doesn't want to disreagrd you. Just show him that you are an ***** kicker of a Soldier and give him plenty of ammo to make a case for you if someone ver asks him why he signed off on you.
