Does anybody know how much damage EMP (electromagnetic pulse) really causes from a nuclear weapon. I've read a couple books and they always say different things about its power. Would a turned off car be affected by a EMP? I tried doing research but its either really confusing or very vague.

EMP disables anything with an ECU, CPU et cetera. If a nuclear **** was airburst over any metropolitan city in the US, it would be back in the stone age with regards to electronics and communications.

yeah Supra is right on that one.

Thanks alot! Isn't military equipment protected against that? Would turned off or unplugged equipment be affected? Like a turned off car or a turned off HAM radio?

No idea (I would think to some degree), and yes and no.

haha! I knew eventually somebody would say that! Im reading the books Warday by whitly streiber and Arc Light by eric l harry. In both books a nuclear war happens. but thye describe the effect of EMP differently I was wondering what was the truth. There both pretty good books especially Arc Light. Plus when you read two of those kinds of books back to back you get very paraniod and try and be super prepared. My friends father is a colonel who went to west point and he makes his son carry food water fishing polls and a pocket knife along with a lot of other stuff wherever he goes even to school. When I drive him around i feel like the safest guy in the world becuase i know hes prepared for almost any situation.

If there ever was a war where nukes were used widely I would want to die in the blast. Who would want to live to only die from all the fall out, and God knows what else.

I know some equipment would able to work after the fact. You know the standard military issued Abacus.

I thought the "Ruggized Computers" would work after an EMB went off.
Older cars would work as long thier is no CPU in the car/truck

the way an EMP would work is by forcing "Electromagnetic Pulses" through the electronics... it doesn't have to be on or off to become broken...

If your working on your computer that is turned off and you give your motherboard a static shock, chances are its fried... same would apply to an EMP
