Service length?

Hi,

I'm researching like crazy and found something I would like to know about. All throughout the NG site it says "serve as little as three years." I just saw this post and got nervous.

8 X 0 - All 8 years on active drilling
6 X 2 - 6 years active drilling, 2 inactive
4 X 4 - 4 years active drilling, 4 inactive
3 X 5 - 3 years active drilling, 5 inactive

So if I sign up for three years of active drilling, that means that after the three years I may still be called up for deployment?

Yes, you will be in "IRR" which may be called up. All military contracts are like that.

That is correct. Any branch of service you enlist for, incurrs a statuatory 8 year obligation. If you enlist for a three year contract, there is an additional 5 years that you may be called up to active duty if necessary.

Thank you for confirming. So basically I can sign up for 3 years, serve those three years, and three years later be called up to deploy somewhere?

Not at all. Your MOS has no influence on your authorized period of enlistment. As mentioned before, every one joining the Armed Forces incurs an 8 year statutory obligation. It's up to you how you want to serve it by selecting one of the authorized periods of enlistment.

Two questions:
1. If I sign up for 8 years active drilling does that make you more likely to be deployed rather than choosing a shorter term for active drilling?
2. If you sign up for say a 3 year active drilling time can you switch that within the 8 years by moving up to more years active drilling?

I asked the Hero On Call people and the say:

Signing up for more years does not make you more eligible to get deployed. Once you have enlisted you can chose to extend your time commitment if you chose to do so.

No, you don't have to serve eight more years if you reenlist. The statutory 8 year obligation only applies to your first term of enlistment. I you do reenlist, you'll be actually serving for a portion or all of your Military Statutory Obligation (MSO) left from your original contract.

For example, let's say your initial enlistment is a 3 X 5. You serve your 3 year contract then decide to reelist for 3 more years. The 3 years on the reelistment will be served concurrently with the 5 years inactive left from the original contract. You'll then have 2 years left on your MSO to be served as inactive once you complete the 3 year term of your reenlistment.

The MSO is the initial one-time obligation which everyone joining the military incurs, no matter what service they join.
