I am currently awaiting my asvab scores. I was looking into radiology 68P and Information 25B. My recruiter is saying "we dont have these." Is the MOS I choose relative to my unit. Meaning, do I have to pick an MOS that my unit requires? I was under the impression I can choose whatever MOS I want in the NG and am aware that my job may change once I show up to my unit. "subject to the requirements of the service."
Can someone please elaborate on this. Thank you.

Well I dont know if you trying to get into a specific unit but if trying to get into a unit close to home which is infantry and they dont have any 25B slots then you SOL. You need to do your homework around the state and see if they have the jobs that you are looking for. You just dont change jobs on a whim because you signed up for an MOS a unit doesnt have. When you sign up for a job, you taking a position somewhere in the state that is held for you until you graduate AIT. That is how it works. The Guard doesnt want to double tap on their end unless its a last resort. You have to wheel and deal my friend. If you want 25B and he says he dont have it then say you going to walk and do. By the next day, you should have a phone call lol

You can get in other units that have the MOS you want, but you risk having to drive pretty far.
Having a unit nearby comes in handy. Sleeping in longer before drill and getting home quicker after drill. A especially when you forget 1 little thing for a showdown inspection.

You can choose whatever your job that your STATE has slots for. So if your state doesn't have those jobs, and you want to serve in your state, then those two MOS's are not and option. If you really want those two that bad, then you might want to look at neighboring states.

You need an open slot within a unit. A slot is specific to MOS and rank. Now just because it is an MP unit, that unit needs admin, supply, cooks... So not every open slot in that unit will be MP. (just an example) There is a program available to your Recruiter to find open slots. But because it isnt updated constantly, alot of time it involves the Recruiter making phone calls to units you are interested in, to find out if they have openings for the slot you are looking for. It is kind of like buying a car without the internet. How far do you want to travel to get this car. What are you willing to pay, and what are you willing to sacrifice to get this amount. Is saving $1000 more important then getting a Toyoto as opposed to a Ford. You have to live with this car for a period of time. Yes you can always look into trading it in, but it isnt a sure thing either.

ya know I feel kinda stupid now after all the research I have done on MOS positions. None of my reading on here or my recruiter has hinted to me that I can only choose what MOS is available in my local unit. Mine is a 5 minute drive as well as the armory. I dont really want to pick something far away to drive to. I was HOPING for a something alot more technical so as to receive a great education and hands on training from the Guard. My recruiter I feel should have explained this to me. She is wanting me to go to MEPS this morning without knowledge of my asvab score or what I can apply for. Im not ok with this. I am going to put off meps for another week. The MOS I choose affects me and my family so thats why I was hoping for something more educational. I'll get back to you all.

Did you go to MEPS and only take your ASVAB there? And then being scheduled to go to MEPS for only 1 day to do your physical and enlistment?
I know that when I originally went to take my ASVAB at MEPS a few months ago they gave me my results before I left the room. Recruiter on the phone had me open the envelope and tell him my scores so I knew them too. He got the paper from me several weeks later.

No I took the ASVAB seperate about a week and a half ago. MEPS was closed in Portland due to ice and snow so I never received my scores last week. I am suppose to get them this morning. Upon that I will make a decision. I dont want to sit down ready to sign my contract without having properly researched my options.

Well you can always look at the Army Reserves. They might have a local unit with the slot you looking for.

Livingit, you are doing the right thing by looking for answers...you always have to be proactive, and take the recruiter with a grain of salt.
Research the MOSs, the units, contact them, contact unit members. You got to make the military work for you.
PS I worked with 5 recruiters until I finally found the MOS and Unit I wanted, no one would give me contact info of a particular unit. They were to obsessed with having me sign, and worry about stuff later....I eventually contacted the unit myself, and they referred me to their own recruiter, and they were more than enthusiastic to answer questions, visit, and iron out all details. Good Luck!

In my opinion, he is being proactive and one step ahead by using the resources here. Something that I didnt have. I was suckered in the combat engineer when I was a 17 year old virgin cherry joining the military. In 1983, your resource was by word of mouth or by a neighbor that served in the Guard or the every present - BE ALL THAT YOU CAN BE commercial.
Even though I did well as a 12B, I would have picked another MOS; something like Infantry. lol not.
I would have signed up for MP back then or a video photographer. Since I liked film back in the day.

Just got back from recruiter. ASVAB score is 72 and a GT of 115 which I am excited about in case I ever go officer. Current openings in my state it looks like are
25U
94F
It looks like I will be able to qualify for Top Secret clearance as well for these. My recruiter made some phone calls in this and everything seems ok. She said that I need this clearance for these MOS. Is this correct?
These would be my first 2 picks then maybe a 29J. And of course I still have an interest in 11B. My 68P Radiology is booked solid. No chance on this one which saddens me. I got one week to get it figured out. Then I will be at MEPS next Tuesday for sure. Im excited. Finally getting things narrowed down.
