What drives me Personally to join the ANG is wanting to be part of something bigger than my self, the desire to be part of something that I can be proud off for once, wanting to get involved with the war on terror instead of just watching on TV while sitting on the couch at home, maybe being able to help fellow soldiers in need over seas instead of being at home and not being able to do as much and wanting to be part of a band of brothers which can only come from the military. Right now I have to lose a little more weight to lower my blood pressure in order to get in, however in order to accomplish this task I watch what I eat and exercise on a regular schedule in hopes one day accomplishing my goal. Every other night I run my 2 miles and there is a huge American flag that is lit up by two big spotlights in the front of someone’s house and it is quite an impressive display to say the least. As I approach and run past this great flag which waves in the night breeze high In the night sky I seem to pick up the pace a little more because it reminds me of how bad I really want to join the ANG.

We cant change the past but the future is ours to build.

Anthony,
You are learning something that is extremely important for anyone who wants to join the ARNG. That is discipline. Not everyone who wants to join is in the greatest of shape but you realized that you have to work on it and are disciplined to work at it. In my case I know that I am in good shape for 41. I have to be to do my civilian job. But I also know i have a ways to go so like you I am running and working out. Just have to give up the darn cigarettes (which I am working on).

More importantly you understand how important team work and a sense of belonging is. Of course you will not get along with everyone you serve with but depite any personal differences you will be able to trust your life to that person. I have had a job where my very life depended upon some watching my back only to find out that only an small hand full of officers actually did. That is a scary proposition. this is one reason I am drawn back to the military. Trust, teamwork, intergrity. Yes you have to have a thick skin once you join because there is a lot of ribbing that happens between soldiers. But, for the most part it has its place just as DI's yelling and screaming have its place.

Good luck keep working hard and don't let anyone knock you off your square. Just listen to the video of LTC White and you will realize what we are truly fighting for.

What drives me personally is people have always doubted me and stuff like that has always drove me to doing stuff that is biiger than myself. When I do join it'll be no different. But it's always been my desire to join the military and I believe this will be my last chance to do it.I know it'll be a rough road to achieve this but as long as I believe in myself and the testicular fortitude (LOL) to do it I know I'll be able to make it.

It seems like everyone who has replied to this thread has pretty much hit the point. But, let me add a little personal perspective. When I entered the Guard many years ago, I was very lacking in self confidence, self discipline, and motivation, but I knew the Army would address those issues, and it did, in a huge way. The values and pride that were imparted on me last to this day, and have affected my profesional (non-military) career in a large degree. I am confident the experience will do the same foe you.

Best of luck, and hang in there, it's not easy, but heck, what in life that is worthwhile is easy!

Thank You all for the kind words and great words of encouragement. I plan on getting to my goal with the ANG in my future. Went to the Doc the other day and the BP is better and to a point that he cut my BP meds in half so progress is in the making. He attributed it to my better diet and new exercise program of biking and running. However got to get the pushups and situps going here though. Anyhow catch you all in the forums and thanks again for the kind replies.
