I'm 39 years old and will be 40 in Feburary 09. When I was 20 years old I entered the USCG and after 10 days received an entry level seperation. RE3L Code JBA, ELS Uncharacterized. The primary reason for this discharge is when I was doing the in processing at Cape May, I admitted that when I was 16 years old I had thoughts of suicide. I don't remember a lot of the details of my discharge, it was a long time ago. I do have the long form of my DD214.

I would like to enlist in the ARNG (AZ). In addition to the RE3L for the USCG, there are some other factors that may limit me. If you can possibily let me know if I'm wasting my time or not in pursuing this dream, I would sincerely appreciate it:

In 2005 I had gastric bypass surgery. I'm 6'3 and weigh 257 right now. I'm still loosing weight.
I'm able to run 2.5 miles in 20 minutes.
I can only do about 10 "real" pushups
I have no problem with the sit ups.
I wear corrective glasses.
I have no criminal history.
My credit is in good shape.
I have never been fired from a job.
I work out every day and I'm loosing weight and improving every day.
I have a Bachelor's degree and an MBA.
I worked as a paramedic/firefighter for 8 years. I'm currently employed in the IT industry.
I am married, and I have 4 children. My wife does not work.
My employer would pay my full time salary while on AD for the ARNG.

What do you think? Do I have a hope here?

I appreciate your insight.

I don't see anything that would medically DQ you. I'm not sure about the other things though.

Thank you for the feedback, that is encouraging. I am also hoping to hear from a recruiter.

I just checked the regs more in depth and found the following as a disqualifier:
"i. Other. (1) Gastrointestinal bypass or stomach stapling for control of obesity."

Might be waiverable though...

Sorry, my original thought was abdominal surgery was okay since you had it over 2 years ago. I didn't realize they had a specific reg for gastric bypass.

Sir,

Make sure you have the page 4 of your dd214. If you dont; you will probably have to request records from it. the page 4 has your re code and separation code.

There are alot of recruiters on this site but it would be nice if you take a drive to your local recruiting station and inquire.

Good luck

v/r, Sidenote. Since you from AZ; are you a fan of McCain?

Side-side note: How about Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers from AZ.? (Formerly the Refreshments)

Cheers-

I'm going to give it a shot, all they can say is no. :) Heck, they might even say yes.
