Yes, they have essentially the same mission as the old LRRP units.

They are not technically Special Operations Forces like Ranger Regiment and Special Forces. They are specialized Infantry units designed to conduct long range surveillance operations. Often people who become part of these types of units take more care and concern in ensuring they are experts at their trade, so you could potentially call them elite.

I believe SteveLord is/was in an LRSD unit he'll be able to tell you exactly their mission is.

I wasn't part of one, but I had trained alongside them a few times and my former squadleader was apart of the unit in PA.
CPT Burritt summed them up well. While they are not technically a ranger or SF outfit...many of them go to those schools on top of others that there arent tabs/badges for. Many of them were jump seniors and masters also because they get a lot of opportunity for schools.
Scout stuff, airborne stuff, water/boat stuff, sniper stuff, ranger stuff, survival stuff, etc.
They are a jack of all trades, but REALLY good at all of those trades.
Only problem...is they are going the way of the dinosaur as the Guard continues to re-transform itself.
Good luck finding one!

MD guard has one still i believe... do you need SF training to get into one of the units? Or will you just be given that opportunity once in one?

Doesn't require it. However, the PA one was very strict about who they let in. Buddies of mine were literally interviewed. As for schools, they gave out a list of a bunch and said to check mark/date the ones you wanted. :D

So if you do get into a LRSD unit you can also get Special Forces training?

If you go to SF school then you are expected to go to a SF Group. Most of your LRSD are ABN, Ranger, Mountain Warfare, AA, etc.. school trained, on top of advanced infantry. It is a very high speed unit but different than SF. You will find alot of older group guys threre or LRSD guy moving from there to Group.
