I noticed in the Omaha World Herald several weeks ago that some of the Nebraska Guard were being deployed to Afghanistan to teach the farmers how to farm in a sustainable manner. I am associated with several sustainable agriculture organizations and would like to know how I could help.

Are you looking to join the guard or just pass your knowledge and expertise on in a voluntary manner?

First, you would need to become a member of the Army National Guard, if not already affiliated. Second, inform your chain of command of your desire to volunteer for the ADT mission (agriculture development team). Third, post your information on the volunteer database on GKO. Ensure that you identify yourself for the ADT mission in the comments section. I work just a few feet from the volunteer database guys, so I know that the ADT mission is particularly hard to fill, because we just don't know who the right people are unless they identify themselves.

Major Richie,

I am retired Air Force and am currently enrolled in a two-year training program to become a certified educator for Holistic Management, which is a decision-making framework designed to help people make sustainable agricultural decisions.

I am more than willing to volunteer to train National Guardsmen on Holistic Management principles and concepts.

Regards,
