Hello everyone. My father is thinking about joining the Guard. He was a prior Marine Officer, 1stLt, and I was wondering if there are any bonuses he would get for enlisting as an Officer in the Guard. Also, can he be active duty while do a Guard job.

Don't know if these are different for officers...but these are the bonuses for prior service.

1 year "Try One" - $0

3 years - $7500

6 years - $15000

If he left the USMC as a 1LT, and he's your father ... exactly how old is he? The max age for reappointment of a 1LT is 33. He can request a waiver, but if he's much past 40, I'm not confident he'll get it.

If the most important things to him are a bonus then he should enlist for the $20k (twice as much as the newly appointed officer's $20k). Additionally, AGR jobs for officers are much rarer than for enlisted (although if he gets hired AGR, that will prevent him from collecting subsequent bonus payments under his original enlistment contract). As a former officer, we can enlist him as an E5, athough he may need to attend AIT.

Hello Maj. he is 44 years old and was in the Marines for 5 years active duty. He talked with a recruiter and he was informed of a Officers spot in Motor T, his MOS from the Marines.

Hello......I'm in the process of enlisting under the OCS option (09S) and was told by my recruiter that the guard would pay off a portion of my federal student loans and offer a bonus depending on what branch recieved. Does anyone know of this is correct? I also did some research and found that the loan repayment may only be available for enlisted soldiers and there is no bonus for non-prior service OCS enlistments. Also, does anyone know who you can talk to that knows about commissioned officer benifits. I would apprciate any information anyone could provide. Thanks

I commissioned in Mar 07, OCS in Spring 07... As of then the only incentive was the $10k bonus upon completion of BOLC2/3. Student Loan Repayment was not available, although I was able to use State Tuition Assistance and of course my PS MGIB.

Not sure if that has changed.

Chris I would contact Maj. Ritchie by phone or email he is a great help when it comes to questions. If he can not help you directly he will find a way to.

You should have a conversation with your State's Officer Strength Manager. Your recruiter can put you in touch.

Ask your recruiter to read the SRIP guidance, and show you exactly how an OCS enlistment contract qualifies for SLRP (student loan repayment program). You may wish to get his NCOIC involved. No need to be a jerk about it, but you need to get this right before you sign.
