Please excuse my ignorance about the Army, (I have no prior service), but there is something I have been wondering about for awhile. Do the deployed troops get issued weapons on an as-needed basis? Obviously, infantry,MP, combat arms,..etc.. will be carrying weapons.
But, what about other MOS's, like mechanics, journalists, cooks....

Yup.

Rifles for the infantry
Batons for the MPs
Pots and Pans for the cooks
Lead pencils for the journalists
Monkey wrenches for the mechanics

Officers can get pistols, along with a thick manual and several courses and range visits on how to shoot the darn thing.
