For just about every specialty or field within the Army Medical Department (AMEDD), the Guard offers a bonus and/or student loan repayment program to make your service financially commensurate with your profession.
With a three-year service agreement, medical professionals can receive the following special pay, paid out over your three years:
And with another three-year commitment, your bonus may be renewable.
*The Guard is currently seeking Physicians, Residents Fellows and Medical Students matching for residencies in the following specialties:
Healthcare providers in the Medical and Dental Corps can receive loan repayment assistance—up to $120,000 for certain specialties—by agreeing to a three-year service commitment with the Guard ($40,000 per year, with a $120,000 lifetime cap).
Physicians Assistants, Physical Therapist, Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, and Clinical Psychologists may qualify for loan repayments up to $20,000 per year with a $60,000 lifetime cap. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Nurses can receive up to $10,000 per year with a $30,000 lifetime cap.
The Guard can help you receive advanced training that will help you pursue your desired specialty, both within the Guard and after your service is complete. If you're training in the specialties listed above, you are eligible for the Specialized Training Assistance Program (STRAP), which offers a monthly stipend of $2,060.
To qualify, you must be unconditionally accepted into the education program or residency for which you seek funding.
The Medical/Dental Student Stipend Program (MDSSP) is an incentive based program targeted to medical and dental students. This program will offer medical and dental students a monthly stipend of at least $2,060. In return, each participant will incur a one-year service obligation for every six months (or part thereof) for which they receive the stipend.
You can join two paths into one career that fulfills your military service and the medical needs of military patients: Work full-time for the Veterans Health Administration and serve part-time in the National Guard. By combining Guard service and VA employment, you’ll be eligible for education loan repayment assistance from both organizations. While the Guard offers the Healthcare Professional Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP) to qualifying members, VA medical professionals can benefit from the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP)—up to $38,000. For more information about EDRP, call VA at 504-589-5267.
Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit each year—funding up to $2,500.
