CAREER OPTIONS
The Army National Guard's AMEDD is organized into six corps, each with a distinct mission. Select a corps to see the roles within it.
Medical Corps
Physicians provide a wide range of healthcare to Soldiers at home and during deployment, covering specialties from family medicine and internal medicine to surgery, oncology and preventive care.
Diagnose and treat Soldiers across a broad range of medical conditions, lead medical units and support readiness at home and in the field.
Perform surgical procedures, examine and diagnose patients and develop disease prevention programs to support unit health and readiness.
While completing a medical degree, serve as a Healthcare Student Officer in non deployable positions with access to financial assistance programs.
Dental Corps
Dental officers ensure every Soldier is in optimal oral health before deployment and assist in emergency medical management of combat and noncombat casualties.
Provide comprehensive dental care and assess Soldier readiness. Serve stateside or in support of deployed units.
Specialties include endodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, prosthodontics and more.
Dental students can serve in nondeployable positions while completing school and access substantial financial assistance through MDSSP.
Nurse Corps
Nurse officers provide professional nursing care and health promotion across military treatment organizations, as Registered Nurses or Family Nurse Practitioners.
Deliver direct patient care to Soldiers and their families across a range of clinical environments, including critical care, trauma and general medicine.
Provide advanced primary care, diagnose conditions, prescribe medications and support Soldier wellness across units and communities.
Specialize in perioperative, emergency trauma or intensive care environments, bringing advanced skills to high-stakes situations.
Medical Specialist Corps
Physician Assistants and Physical Therapists work closely with Guard physicians and primary medical officers to support unit readiness across combat and support roles.
Work alongside Guard physicians to diagnose and treat illness and injury, prescribe medications and provide primary care to Soldiers in diverse settings.
Assess and treat musculoskeletal conditions, support injury rehabilitation and help Soldiers maintain the physical fitness required for service.
Medical Service Corps
The most diverse branch within AMEDD‚ spanning administration, environmental sciences, preventive medicine, aeromedical evacuation, human resources and more.
Manage the administrative and operational functions of Guard medical units, ensuring resources are deployed effectively in support of Soldier care.
Identify and reduce health risks in military environments‚ from environmental hazards to disease prevention and public health planning.
Fly medical evacuation missions in support of Guard operations, transporting injured Soldiers under time-critical conditions.
Behavioral Health
Clinical psychologists and social workers plan, direct and administer programs that support the mental health and social well-being of Soldiers‚ a critical and growing mission area for the Guard.
Assess, diagnose and treat Soldiers experiencing psychological disorders or emotional distress. Lead behavioral health programs at the unit and command level.
Provide clinical social work services and counseling, connect Soldiers and families with resources and promote resilience across the unit community.

Have or be pursuing an accredited medical, dental or qualifying health professional degree
Hold or be in the process of obtaining a license to practice in your specialty
Be a U.S. citizen
Be at least 21 years of age
Meet prescribed medical and moral standards for commissioned officer appointment
Be eligible to obtain a Secret security clearance
Complete initial military officer training at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX
Most AMEDD specialties attend a 26-day orientation course; some attend the full seven-week course
