The Active First option lets you begin your service with full-time military service—at full-time Soldier's pay—plus earn an additional bonus on top of other Guard benefits.

You'll learn an exciting career and travel across the U.S. or overseas. When your Active Duty commitment is over, you'll return to part-time Guard service with your local unit. Live and work in your hometown, and receive a second paycheck for drilling and training in your community—while you pursue your degree or continue your civilian occupation—and continue to receive great Guard benefits.

It works like this:

  • Join the Guard and enter the Guard's Recruit Sustainment Program.
  • Pre-train for Basic Combat Training and get paid for drill weekends.
  • Enter the Army for 36 months in one of several specialized jobs.
  • After processing, receive an additional bonus, paid in yearly increments.
  • Following active duty service, transition into your local National Guard unit.
  • Pursue your college degree with the Guard's extensive education benefits.
