The 10th state to be admitted to the Union, the Virginia Army National Guard (VAARNG) traces its beginning all the way to the founding of Jamestown in 1607. One famous Guard member of the VAARNG is GEN Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. Today's 116th Infantry is descended from his brigade and still bears the motto "Stonewall Brigade." The VAARNG teamed up with the 29th Infantry Division, 116th Infantry and 111th Field Artillery, leading the way onto Omaha Beach in the first assault waves of D-Day.
